Maria Sharapova is a well-known professional tennis player from Russia. She started playing professional tennis since she was 14 and has retained the world’s number one spot on five different occasions. She is one of the 10 female tennis player and the only Russian to win the Career Grand Slam – all 5 Grand Slam titles – one Wimbledon, one US Open, one Australian Open and the two French Open, having won Silver for the country in women’s singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

At the age of six, she attended a tennis clinic in Moscow run by Martina Navratilova, who suggested her to join IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. She was trained by Rick Macci, in the Rick Macci Tennis Academy before signing off her deal with IMG.

Maria began her professional Tennis career in 2001 and made her first WTA debut at the Pacific Life Open in 2002. She won her maiden WTA title at the Japan Open Tennis Championship. She was awarded the WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2003.
