Born on May 1st, 1971 in Hyderabad, India to a Tamil father and a Bengali mother, Ajith was the second son of the three children, with the other two being settled in the US. Raised in Chennai, Ajith dropped out of his school before attending higher secondary education in order to pursue his ambitious racing career.
He started to work at the age of 18 to support his racing career and eventually leading to films. His first film as a lead actor was a Telugu film Prema Pustakamn, and that was his only Telugu film till date. He made his Tamil debut with Amaravathi in 1992 which went to become a decent success.
Simultaneously, he had undergone training to become an amateur motor race for which he had to put an end for a while.
